A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is 100% electric – it draws power from a battery which can be recharged by plugging it into mains power. This is seen as the environmental gold standard of EV options. A fully electric vehicle also has far fewer moving parts than a petrol or diesel engine, which means less maintenance and overall lower operating costs.
A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) uses a combination of a petrol-powered engine and an electric motor with a battery that can be plugged into mains power to be charged. PHEV’s typically allow for a small range of EV only driving (approximately 20km-90km per charge*) or can be used as a highly efficient hybrid combination for significantly reduced fuel consumption.
A hybrid vehicle uses a combination of a petrol-powered engine and an electric motor with a battery that is recharged via the petrol engine or energy captured from braking. A hybrid does not need to be plugged in and offers significant fuel saving costs over its traditional counterpart.
Armstrong’s is fully committed to an electric future for New Zealand, having invested over $500,000 to create EV-ready workshops across the country. You and your new EV will be exceptionally well supported with specialist EV diagnostic technology, charging infrastructure and dedicated EV sales and service specialists. Plus, our EVs are all backed by a genuine factory warranty and factory-trained technicians.
What are the benefits of owning an Electric Vehicle?
Environmental: As electric vehicles run on battery power alone, they don’t have a tailpipe, meaning that an electric car does not release tailpipe emissions into the air whilst driving.
Driving enjoyment: All electric vehicles are automatic, and with no combustion engine, they offer a smooth and quiet journey.
Cost saving: Although the initial purchase price of electric vehicles can be high, generally running costs tend to be lower than petrol or diesel cars, thanks to a lower cost of charging the vehicle at home in comparison to filling up with petrol or diesel at a service station. Some car parks even offer free charging for your electric vehicle. You can also benefit from not having to pay road user charges. In addition to this, servicing costs are lower than petrol & diesel vehicles.
What is the difference between an Electric Vehicle and a Plug-in Hybrid?
Hybrids and battery electric vehicles have a key difference. A hybrid electric vehicle switches between petrol and electric power, and pure electric power, and the hybrid battery charges when braking or coasting – so there is no need to plug in. A battery electric vehicle does not have a tailpipe resulting in zero tailpipe emissions, and runs on battery power alone, meaning that you have to plug in the vehicle to charge it.
How long does an Electric Vehicle take to charge?
The charging time depends on how and where you are charging your EV.
At home, you can conveniently charge your vehicle using a dedicated EV charger, or even a domestic plug socket.
Rapid chargers are the fastest way to charge your vehicle when you are traveling, and these can be commonly found at service stations, with the ability to charge your car quickly and efficiently whilst you have a break from driving and grab a coffee.
How far can I travel on a single charge?
The range of an electric vehicle depends on various factors, including the vehicle model, battery capacity, driving conditions, and weather. Most modern electric vehicles offer a range between 150-400 kilometers, but some high-end models can exceed 500 kilometers on a single charge.
